Xeptagon has been awarded the contract to develop the National Carbon Registry for the Government of Zimbabwe. The implementation of the Registry is done with the assistance of UNDP and the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife of Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe adds to the list of countries Xeptagon has supported to develop National Carbon Registries and Carbon Trading Infrastructure. Previously, Xeptagon has supported the development of the National Carbon Registry for Namibia and Sri Lanka while developing Carbon Marketplaces for ventures in South Korea and Hong Kong. In addition, the Digital Public Good National Carbon Registry of United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as well as the National Climate Transparency System of UNDP is also developed by Xeptagon.
Zimbabwe is actively advancing its climate policies to align with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Article 6 Implementation Framework is one of the key focuses of the initiative. The Article 6 implementation will include a Carbon Market Strategy for Zimbabwe, an Article 6 Action Plan, and a state-of-the-art National Carbon Registry. The government is currently actively finalizing this framework along with the forthcoming Climate Change Management Bill of 2024.
Along with these developments, the Government of Zimbabwe requested UNDP to support the development of a National Carbon Registry for the country. The request was made to use the Digital Public Good Carbon Registry of UNDP which is already being deployed in countries such as Côte d'Ivoire, Namibia, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka among others. As mentioned earlier, the UNDP National Carbon Registry codebase was also developed by Xeptagon. Digital systems are an important technological element of the Paris Agreement to enable transparency and credibility to the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) reporting, as well as to enable countries to trade carbon credits. The new Carbon Registry will ensure transparency, accountability, and the highest environmental integrity in carbon credit trading for Zimbabwe.
The newly developed Carbon Registry will include many advanced features such as a carbon project tracking system, a project management module, a carbon accounting module, an investment and financing module, a carbon credit transaction module, an innovative dashboard, and a reporting tool as required by the Paris Agreement. In addition, the registry will enable program verifiers to conduct verification and certification activities within the system.
